Must-know Burberry Facts

All applicants ought to know these basics about Burberry before applying or interviewing for any role.

Founded in 1856 by 21-year-old Thomas Burberry in Basingstoke, England, Burberry built its reputation on practical outerwear before becoming a global symbol of British luxury.
Thomas Burberry invented gabardine in 1879, a breathable, weatherproof fabric that helped define the brand’s trench coats and remains central to its craftsmanship story.
The Burberry trench coat was developed for military use in the First World War, giving employees a heritage product with unusually strong links to both function and fashion history.
Burberry’s check lining, introduced in the 1920s, became one of luxury’s most recognizable codes and is managed today with the same brand-protection discipline seen at houses like Gucci and Louis Vuitton.
The company has often been an early digital adopter in luxury, from livestreamed runway shows to social commerce experiments, making it attractive for candidates interested in heritage brands with modern retail ambitions.
Burberry appointed Daniel Lee as Chief Creative Officer in 2022 after his influential tenure at Bottega Veneta, signaling a renewed focus on British identity, product elevation, and leather goods.
