Decoration made by attaching pieces of fabric to a larger fabric surface.
Look at how the design was made. In appliqué a separate piece supplies part of the visible surface, while the ground fabric supports it. An embroidered motif can be made independently and then sewn to a garment as an appliqué. Embroidery worked directly into the garment uses stitches to form the design there. The two techniques can appear on one item, so a product description may name each separately when explaining how a badge, figure or other detail was made.
In job listings
Listings rarely name this technique. It is useful to designers, embroiderers and development teams who specify or make decoration, and to sales staff explaining how a motif was built on a garment or a shoe. Search local jobs for “fabric”.
