Luxury Lexicon A definition

Biodegradable

Capable of being broken down by microorganisms under particular environmental conditions.

Biodegradation depends on the material and the conditions in which microorganisms act on it. A claim therefore needs to explain the relevant disposal environment and the evidence for breakdown there. The word alone gives no reliable timescale or assurance that an item will break down completely after ordinary disposal. Bio-based describes the origin of a material, while biodegradable describes its behaviour under particular conditions. For packaging decisions, these are separate questions. Teams need to connect material claims with the intended waste route rather than assume that a renewable feedstock guarantees a suitable end-of-life outcome.

Sustainability, product and packaging roles may use this word. In those jobs, a claim may need testing and evidence, including the conditions under which a material actually breaks down. Search local jobs for “sustainability”.
