Luxury Lexicon A definition

Carat (gemstone weight)

A carat is a unit of gemstone weight equal to 200 milligrams.

One carat is 200 milligrams and divides into 100 points. A stone of 50 points weighs half a carat. Two diamonds of the same weight can look different in size because their proportions and the way they are cut affect their dimensions. In a description of a ring, first establish whether a weight belongs to the centre stone or is a total for several stones.

Jewellery sales roles treat this as basic knowledge. An advisor must keep carat weight apart from karat, which measures gold, and be ready to explain to a client that weight is not the same as size or quality. Search local jobs for “jewellery”.
