Luxury Lexicon A definition

Cemented

A shoe construction in which adhesive bonds the outsole to the upper.

In cemented construction, the upper is worked over the insole on a last before adhesive attaches the outsole directly to the lasted upper. The cement provides the sole attachment described by the term. Asolo uses this method and explains that a worn sole can be removed and a replacement cemented directly to the upper when the footwear is in suitable condition. Cemented construction therefore does not by itself establish whether a shoe can be resoled. The maker’s repair process and the condition of the shoe also matter when assessing that possibility.

In job listings

A listing is unlikely to mention cemented construction by name. The word matters in footwear development and quality roles, and to sales staff explaining why a sole is light and flexible but may be repaired differently from a stitched one. Search local jobs for “footwear”.
