A lightweight, sheer fabric with a slightly grainy surface and a flowing drape.
Chiffon is a sheer, lightweight textile woven in plain weave from fine, tightly twisted yarns. It was originally made from silk and can also be made from synthetic fibres, so the fabric name alone does not establish its fibre content. Its lightness and transparency explain its use in garments and accessories such as blouses, dresses, scarves and veils. Georgette is a useful comparison because it too can be sheer and uses twisted yarns. Its characteristic dull, crinkled finish helps distinguish it from chiffon, although a material specification remains more informative than either fabric name on its own.

This fabric comes up in eveningwear design, alterations and sales. A role handling chiffon calls for care in cutting and sewing, since it is sheer and shifts easily, which is also why alterations may take longer. Search local jobs for “fabric”.
