Chronograph

A watch with a stopwatch function that can start, stop and reset elapsed-time measurement while continuing to tell the time.

A chronograph adds a mechanism for measuring elapsed time independently of the watch’s ordinary time display. Its timing hand can be started, stopped and returned to zero on demand. A cam or column wheel coordinates these operations, allowing the user to control the timing sequence through pushers. Different chronograph arrangements add further capabilities, such as recording intermediate times or restarting a measurement quickly. The term describes a function. A chronometer, by comparison, is a watch whose timekeeping rate has been independently tested and certified. A watch can combine a chronograph function with chronometer certification.

Richemont’s watchmaker posting in Mississauga explicitly required servicing expertise covering chronographs as well as mechanical and automatic movements, power reserve and calendar complications. Here the term identified a technical capability expected of the watchmaker. Understanding its start, stop and reset functions distinguishes this servicing requirement from a general claim about timekeeping accuracy. Search local jobs for “watchmaker”.
