A band or shaped piece of fabric attached around a garment’s neckline.
A collar gives a garment’s neck area an additional fabric structure. Its shape and construction determine whether it stands up, folds over or lies close to the garment. During making, the collar and the neckline must fit together accurately so that the finished edge sits as intended. Cutting, stitching and pressing all contribute to that result. A collar is distinct from the neckline itself, which is the opening around the neck. A garment can therefore have a clearly shaped neckline without having a collar attached to it.

Tailoring and alteration roles may list collar work among their duties, along with sleeves and hems. Pattern and shirt-making roles treat it as one of the more exact parts of a garment. Search local jobs for “tailor”.
