Luxury Lexicon A definition

Cross-selling

Suggesting an additional product that complements the one a customer is considering or buying.

Cross-selling adds a relevant complementary suggestion to a customer’s consideration of a product. An adviser first establishes what the customer is buying or interested in, then explains how another item could work with it. A belt suggested alongside trousers is a simple example of the relationship between the products. The additional item should have a clear use or connection that the customer can assess. Upselling instead encourages a customer to choose a higher-value version or option. Both techniques can occur during the same conversation, but they describe different recommendations.

Bottega Veneta required its Client Advisor in Montreal to use cross-selling alongside other selling techniques within the Bottega Veneta Client Journey. The employer linked these techniques with transaction performance and closing sales, while listing cross-selling and upselling separately as parts of the adviser’s selling work.
