Luxury Lexicon A definition

Damask

A woven fabric whose pattern is formed by contrasting weave structures, often creating a reversible design.

Damask is a figured textile woven with one warp and one weft. Contrasting weave structures form the design, which appears in reverse on the back. The visual effect can depend on light catching the smooth face and contrasting reverse of satin weave differently. This helps explain how a pattern can remain visible without relying on different yarn colours. Damask can be made on a jacquard loom, which controls warp ends individually to produce complex designs. Brocade can also be made on such a loom, but its raised decoration is formed through weft patterning.

Damask comes up in fabric development, design and home textiles. It is often compared with jacquard and brocade, and it helps to be able to explain that the pattern here comes from contrasting weave structures. Search local jobs for “fabric”.
