A current employee’s recommendation of someone for a role, which the employer may reward with a bonus if that person is hired.
An employee referral connects a potential recruit with an employer through someone already working there. A formal referral program sets out how the recommendation is submitted and recorded, which vacancies qualify and whether a successful referral earns a payment. The employee may be asked to speak with the candidate and explain the opportunity before making an introduction. A recommendation does not itself establish that the candidate will be hired. Employees should check the applicable scheme before referring someone, because eligibility and payment conditions belong to the employer’s particular arrangements.
