A lightweight, open fabric with a sheer appearance.
Gauze can describe an open, sheer fabric, while gauze weave refers to a particular way of arranging the warp yarns. In leno weaving, some warp ends twist partly around other ends instead of remaining parallel. A leno loom uses components called doups to produce that crossing action. This gives a newcomer two separate questions when examining a sample: how transparent is the cloth, and how are its yarns interlaced? Sheerness alone does not identify the construction. The V&A records a Fendi dress designed by Karl Lagerfeld with stripes alternating between silk satin and gauze, showing its use alongside another fabric structure.

Listings seldom name this fabric. Designers and developers may use it for layered garments and summer pieces, and anyone handling it should expect an open weave that needs care when sewing or altering. Search local jobs for “textile”.
