The study and identification of gemstones and their properties.
Gemmology combines gemstone identification with the assessment of gemstone properties and quality. Identification asks what a stone is, including whether it is natural, laboratory-grown or a simulant and whether it shows treatments. Grading examines quality within an appropriate system. GIA’s Graduate Gemologist program teaches the use of gemmological equipment, diamond grading through the 4Cs and evaluation using its Colored Stone Grading System. Identification and grading answer different questions: establishing a stone’s identity does not by itself establish its quality or market value. This distinction helps keep product descriptions precise.
