Luxury Lexicon A definition

Last

A shaped form used to build a shoe and establish its shape and fit.

A last is a three-dimensional form over which a shoe upper is pulled during construction. Its shape establishes the shoe’s outline and the space available for the foot, so it affects appearance and fit together. Grenson describes one last based on an orthopaedic shape and another with a more defined toe shape. These are differences in the form used to make the shoe, rather than surface decoration. Knowing the nominal shoe size alone does not describe that form, because different lasts can produce different shapes within the same size.

In job listings

Listings use the word for this tool rarely, and more often in the verb’s other senses. In footwear design and development, the last is central, since it sets the shape and fit. A specialist may mention it to explain why two sizes fit differently. Search local jobs for “footwear”.
