Luxury Lexicon A definition

Monochrome

A design or outfit based on one colour, which may appear in several shades.

A monochrome outfit uses one colour as the basis for the whole combination. The pieces can match closely or use different shades of that colour, so the result need not be visually uniform. A stylist can assess the colour relationship separately from the outline created by the garments. This distinction matters because choosing one colour does not determine whether the outfit is fitted, loose or layered. Under this definition, an outfit combining black and white uses two colours. The word’s broader use for black-and-white imagery should therefore be distinguished from the single-colour styling sense here.

In job listings

This word belongs to styling, design and visual merchandising more than to vacancies. A stylist or client advisor may suggest a monochrome outfit, using different shades and textures of one colour. Search local jobs for “fashion”.
