Assessing a store’s service through trained evaluators who pose as ordinary customers and report against set criteria.
Mystery shopping uses a planned customer scenario and a questionnaire or scorecard to assess service processes. Evaluators follow a brief, carry out the specified interaction and record what happened against agreed criteria. A useful scenario reflects a realistic customer journey, while factual questions help make reports consistent across visits. The findings can show where service behaviours meet expectations and where improvement is needed. This differs from a customer satisfaction survey, which asks actual customers about their experience, because the evaluator deliberately tests selected parts of the service under a defined brief.
