Luxury Lexicon A definition

Paid media

Advertising space or distribution purchased by a brand, including paid search and social advertising.

Paid media involves purchasing placement or distribution for a brand’s message. It includes search advertising, social advertising, display placements and traditional formats such as print or outdoor advertisements. A team selects channels in relation to its objective, prepares suitable content and pays for that content to reach an audience. The defining feature is the purchase of exposure. Owned media consists of channels the business controls, such as its website or corporate social accounts, while earned media comes from attention generated by others. A campaign can combine these categories while giving each a different job.
