Perlage

A decorative finish made by overlapping small circular marks on a watch component with a rotating abrasive tool.

Perlage builds a decorative surface from small circular impressions that overlap in a regular sequence. A rotating tool carrying abrasive is pressed briefly against the component, then moved to make the next impression. Consistent spacing helps produce an even pattern. The finish is used on movement plates and bridges, including surfaces hidden beneath the dial, and on the inside of case backs. Horopedia records the historical use of circular graining inside case backs to catch dust. Recognizing this applied finish helps distinguish deliberate surface decoration from the functional arrangement of the movement’s components.

Listings may ask for finishing skills in general terms. Perlage is one specific finish, found on plates and bridges, and it is useful vocabulary for decoration workshops and for an advisor showing a client a movement. Search local jobs for “watchmaker”.
