Product lifecycle management: coordinating a product’s information and development from its initial concept onward.
PLM coordinates people, processes and product information across a product’s lifecycle, from concept and design through production and later stages. Its software provides a shared information backbone so teams can maintain specifications, track versions and work with agreed product details. In development work, updating a record helps subsequent decisions use the current information as the product changes. PLM describes a broader approach than a single database or development task. Product information management has a more focused role in preparing and distributing product details across sales channels and other systems.
