Luxury Lexicon A definition

Precious metals

Gold, platinum, silver and palladium, worked in jewellery as alloys whose metal content is stated as fineness.

In jewellery, the precious metals are gold, platinum, silver and palladium. They are commonly worked as alloys, mixtures in which the proportion of precious metal is described as fineness. Fineness expresses that proportion by weight in parts per thousand, so 750 means 750 parts precious metal in 1,000 parts of alloy. The metal name, its fineness and the finished object’s weight describe different things. Surface coatings also need to be distinguished from the material underneath them. Hallmarking concerns the identification and testing of precious-metal articles, with requirements depending on the jurisdiction.

Richemont’s Watchmaker role in Mississauga required proper segregation and handling of used spare parts, including precious metals, with secure return or disposal under Group policies. Knowing the metal mattered when handling workshop materials as well as when making or repairing a piece. It distinguished those parts from non-precious components.
