Paid time off is an employer’s term for time away from work during which an employee continues to receive pay.
A benefits list may use paid time off as an umbrella term without naming the reasons for an absence or the number of days offered. Check the employer’s policy for what the allowance covers and how it is booked. Vacation is a specific entitlement under the applicable employment standards. A general reference to PTO gives too little detail to calculate that entitlement. Québec, for example, publishes separate guidance on annual vacation and the pay that goes with it.
