Luxury Lexicon A definition

Sampling

Making or assessing trial versions of a product before production; in beauty, sampling can instead mean providing trial quantities to customers.

In garment development, sampling turns a proposed design into trial versions that can be assessed before production. Pattern cutting, construction and fitting can lead to repeated adjustments as the team refines fit and proportions. A later sample provides a basis for the intended production version. The stage and purpose of a sample matter because an early development piece and a final approved version answer different questions. Beauty businesses also use sampling for customer trial quantities, a separate commercial sense that should be distinguished from making development prototypes.
