Luxury Lexicon A definition

Sommelier

A wine specialist who advises guests and serves wine, and may also manage a restaurant’s wine list or cellar.

A sommelier brings wine knowledge into restaurant service, helping guests choose drinks that suit their preferences and food. The work at the table includes explaining recommendations and opening and serving wine correctly. The Court of Master Sommeliers’ Certified Sommelier examination tests tasting, beverage theory and tableside service, reflecting the combination of knowledge and practical delivery involved. Wine qualifications and job responsibilities remain distinct. WSET offers a separate sequence of wine awards and a diploma, while an employer determines the duties of a particular restaurant role. Recommending a pairing can also be part of a server’s work without establishing responsibility for the wine list or cellar.

In job listings

Hospitality listings may advertise this title directly, or ask for wine knowledge within a server’s job. Check whether the role manages a list and a cellar or mainly advises guests, as the two carry different responsibilities. Search local jobs for “hospitality”.
