Luxury Lexicon A definition

Storm welt

A welt with a raised edge against the upper that helps limit water entering the joint between the upper and sole.

A storm welt has a raised edge at the junction between the upper and sole. The ridge helps resist moisture entering that joint. Tricker’s describes the storm welt on its Bourton country shoe as an additional water-resistant seal, and Crockett & Jones also associates the construction with added water resistance. This describes protection at a particular seam rather than a waterproof rating for the complete shoe. Terminology can vary between makers. Paraboot uses storm welted as another name for its Norwegian construction, so the name alone does not establish an identical assembly method across brands.

Only a specialist footwear role is likely to need this word. An advisor can use it when explaining a sturdier welted shoe, and a developer when choosing how the upper meets the sole in a shoe intended for wet weather. Search local jobs for “footwear”.
