Luxury Lexicon A definition

Suede

Leather finished on the flesh side, the inner face of the skin, and sanded to a soft, velvety nap.

Suede has a soft nap that needs attention when the surface is cleaned or refreshed. Loake describes suede brushes as tools for raising that nap and notes that gentler brush heads are available where surface scuffing is a concern. Its guidance also distinguishes the leather from its protective treatment. Some modern suede leathers have protectors incorporated during tanning, while others need protection applied afterwards. A care discussion should therefore consider both the surface and any treatment already present. The material name alone does not establish which protective finish a particular shoe has received.

In job listings

Suede shows up in product descriptions more than in job descriptions. Advisors in footwear and leather goods may need to explain how it wears and how to care for it, and how its finish differs from nubuck or smooth leather. Search local jobs for “footwear”.
