Luxury Lexicon A definition

Sustainable fashion

An approach to reducing environmental and social harm across the making, use and disposal of clothing.

Sustainable fashion considers impacts across a garment’s life, from raw materials and production to retail, use and disposal. Practical work can address resource consumption, pollution, production conditions and ways to keep clothing useful for longer. An assessment needs a defined scope because improving one stage does not establish the performance of every other stage. Durability, repair and responsible production are different contributions that require their own evidence. The term is not a blanket certification. A useful claim explains the practice, the products or operations it covers and the basis for judging an improvement.
