Luxury Lexicon A definition

Trade marketing

Marketing activity with retailers and distributors to support a product’s visibility and sales through their channels.

Trade marketing addresses the partners through which a brand reaches shoppers. A brand explains its product range, target customers and proposed marketing support so that a retailer or distributor can assess the value of working together. Planning can cover where the partner fits within distribution and what benefits the collaboration should deliver. Communication may also give retail partners practical information about upcoming activity or shipping deadlines. The useful distinction is the immediate audience: trade marketing works through a business relationship, even when its eventual purpose is to encourage consumer purchases.
