Visual merchandising is the presentation of products in a store through displays, fixtures and their placement.
A display makes a choice about what the customer sees first. The same jacket might appear in a window to introduce a collection and beside complementary pieces on the sales floor. Buying determines which pieces enter the assortment. Visual merchandising gives the available pieces a place, then adjusts the display as stock and the story of the collection change.

In Toronto, Christian Dior asked a boutique director to keep the presentation in line with campaigns. A separate visual merchandising specialist posting called for displays to change as products sold and new pieces launched. The two roles carry different responsibility for the same presentation.
