An Excel function that finds a value in the first column of a range and returns a value from another column in the same row.
VLOOKUP searches the first column of a selected table range and returns the value from a specified column on the matching row. Setting up the function means choosing the lookup value, the range, the return column number and the match option. The lookup column must sit to the left of the value being returned. For a product code that must match exactly, the exact-match option matters. Approximate matching assumes the lookup column is sorted and can return a different result. A useful check is therefore whether the formula is configured for the kind of match the task requires.

Rimowa named VLOOKUP among the Excel skills for its junior accountant in Cambridge, Ontario. The job involved matching transactions and investigating reconciliation differences. A lookup could bring the figure for a transaction identifier from a second table into the working sheet. The advertisement did not prescribe that formula for each reconciliation.
