Luxury Lexicon A definition

Wholecut

A shoe whose upper is cut principally from one piece of leather.

Wholecut describes how the upper is pieced together. Carmina explains that its wholecut Oxfords use a single piece of leather joined at the heel, while Cheaney describes a wholecut Oxford with one piece of calf leather for the upper. The term concerns that component rather than every layer of the finished shoe. Carmina characterizes the single-piece construction as a demanding shoemaking pattern. Wholecut and Oxford also describe different features: the first identifies the upper’s construction, while the second identifies the closed lacing arrangement.

Only a specialist men’s footwear role is likely to need this word. An advisor can use it to explain why a wholecut has so few seams, and why cutting the upper from one piece of leather is a mark of formality and care. Search local jobs for “footwear”.
